The highlights of Carmen, one of the most popular operas ever were streamed live in the programme of OperaWednesday on 7 October 2020 at 8 p.m. on Facebook and Origo.hu.
Bizet’s masterpiece has been the top draw at the world’s opera houses for nearly 150 years now, and it is the one played most int the 136-year history of Hungarian State Opera, over 1100 times. And no wonder: the dangerously alluring and unrestrained Gypsy woman at its heart is one of the most thrilling and erotic female characters ever to grace an opera stage. With lyrical passages like the famous Habanera that go straight to the heart and raucous crowd scenes like the Torreador Song, this opera is a passionate love story that unfolds with astonishing realism – and tragedy.
The highlights of Carmen were staged by András Aczél and Katalin Lázár with costumes by Márta Pilinyi. The title role was performed by Erika Gál, her partners were Boldizsár László (Don José), Orsolya Sáfár (Micaëla), Zoltán Nagy (Escamillo), Máté Fülep (Dancaïre), Zoltán Megyesi (Remendado), Ildikó Megyimórecz (Frasquita) and Anna Fürjes (Mercédès). The performance was narrated by Dániel Mona, featured on the piano was Pálma Hidegkuti.
